What happens when TMILES TL803 goes head-to-head with 3M Cubitron™ II 775L in a metal sanding test?
A customer currently using substantial volumes of 3M 737U and 3M 775L for metal sheet sanding asked us to test the corresponding TMILES products.
We selected two comparable product pairings:
• Paper-backed: TMILES TL73 vs. 3M Cubitron II 737U
• Film-backed: TMILES TL803 vs. 3M Cubitron II 775L
The tests covered P240, P320 and P400. Each disc completed three consecutive 5-minute sanding cycles under a controlled laboratory procedure. Cumulative material removal, retained surface dust and surface roughness were recorded.
The results
Paper-backed TL73 vs. 3M 737U:
• P240: 4.2% higher cumulative material removal
• P320: 2.0% higher
• P400: 16.4% lower
At P400, TL73 removed less material but produced a lower Ra than 737U. This highlights the importance of evaluating cutting speed and surface finish separately.
Film-backed TL803 vs. 3M 775L:
• P240: 34% higher cumulative material removal
• P320: 30.5% higher
• P400: 29.0% higher
3M 775L recorded slightly lower Ra at P240 and P320, while TL803 recorded lower Ra at P400.
Our conclusion
TL73 is a strong substitution candidate at P240 and P320. TL803 is the priority field-trial candidate across P240-P400 when removal efficiency is the main objective.
The next step is customer-site validation using the actual sheet material, sanding equipment, extraction system and operators. Disc life, loading, edge conformity, scratch consistency and cost per square meter should also be measured before a bulk conversion decision.
